ETHEL “WOB” BARBER Waabanangookwe “Morning Star Woman”
Ethel J. Barber, age 71 of LCO, died Monday, August 27, 2012 at Benedictine Living Center of Spooner.
Ethel “Wob" was born in Hayward, Wisconsin on May 19, 1941, the daughter of Johnson “John” Nayquonabe and Mary Frogg. Throughout her childhood, she moved to various locations throughout Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin, accompanying her parents in their quest to raise a family. Wob was educated at Pequot Lake and Jenkins, Minnesota. When her family was closer to her home of LCO, she attended school in Webster and at the Kinnamon School, which still stands at the corner of Highways K and E. When at home in the community of Round Lake, Wob was raised by her grandparents John Frogg and Elizabeth Carroll. She went to cooking school and worked in the food industry and was highly respected for her great cooking ability. Most notably, her delicious fry bread. Wob loved to travel and was most thankful of the fact that she was able to put asema in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and Gulf of Mexico. Wob was married to Russell “Buck” Barber and together they had seven children and she is an auntie to a great many adults and children and numerous we’eh. Wob is a fourth degree member of the Midewewin Lodge and is of the Wolf clan. She was given her Ojibwe name Waabanangookwe, which means “Morning Star Woman” by her grandfather John Frogg. In 2010, Wob was honored at the Lac Courte Oreilles Honor the Earth Powwow as the Anishinabekwe (Woman of the Year).
She is survived by her children, Russell “Rusty”, Ricky “Beanie”, Tommy, Dowie, Daniel, Terrance and Melanie Barber; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchild; sisters Doris, Thelma, Carolyn Nayquonabe, Debra Bellamy, Susan Fullington; brother Bill Cadotte; great-aunt Clara Beebe; numerous other relatives and friends.
Wob was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband Russell “Buck”; infant daughter Brenda Lee; infant granddaughter Miranda; step father William Sutton; brother Bud; sisters Marlene Austin and Trixie Nayquonabe.
Midewiwin Funeral Rites will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at Ethel’s home in Round Lake conducted by Skip Churchill. Burial will be in Round Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29 at Ethel’s home.
Honorary bearers will be Bonnie Belille, Patsy Belille, Bill Cadotte, Jacqui Cadotte, Dorothea Cross, Louis Gordon, Barb Lacapa and George Morrow.
Casket bearers will be Mick Belille, Brian Delapast, Bill Merrill, Jim O’Shogay, Gary Quaderer Jr. and Steve Thayer.
