Carol Ann Gerich, age 86, of Hayward, died Sunday, January 1, 2023, at Water's Edge Care Center.

Carol was born April 5, 1936, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Harvey and Annabelle (Newman) Nicklas. In 1941 she moved to Lincolnwood, IL where she spent most of her school years. Carol was involved in every sport that was offered to girls including speed skating, baseball, basketball, field hockey and volleyball. Her family purchased a small diner in Shelby, MI where she finished her junior and senior years. Carol was voted the most athletic female of her 1954 graduating class.

After graduation, her family sold the diner and moved back to Lincolnwood. Carol was married to Paul Gerich in 1955. They later moved to Rolling Meadows, IL, where they spent ten years raising their three children. In 1972 the family moved to Hayward, WI, where Carol worked as an Administrative Assistant for County Judge Alvin Kelsey. In 1982 she moved back to Michigan where she enjoyed 38 years near her sister Marilyn and daughter Donna. Carol spent her last three years back in Hayward where she spent many hours with her son Steve.

Carol was an avid bowler and spent many years in various leagues in IL, WI and MI, often attending tournaments. She enjoyed following many different sports including the NBA, MLB and NFL as well as tennis and golf. Carol was a loyal fan of the Cubs, Packers, and Chicago Bulls during the Michael Jordan days.

She so looked forward to summers in Michigan when her children and grandchildren would come to spend the week with her. Many great memories were made, especially the many beautiful sunsets on Lake Michigan. Carol loved the beach, the sand, the boats, the lighthouses, the waves, and the peace she felt there.

She is survived by her son Steve (Linda) Gerich; daughter Donna (Kevin) Hiner; grandchildren Joel, Becky, Drew, Ryan, Kate, Emily and Christian; and four great grandchildren.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; son Scott Gerich; sisters Bonnie Stepler, Marilyn Irey & Jackie Nicklas; and brother Clark Nicklas.

The Memorial Service was held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Hayward Wesleyan Church.  Pastor Chad McCallum officiated with music provided by Joel Gerich & Linda Gerich. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Honorary bearers were Carol's grandchildren.
