Obituary

Carol Schuck, age 68, of Winter, WI died Monday, January 30, 2017 at her home.

Carol Joyce Van Winkle was born May 29, 1948 in Ladysmith, WI, the daughter of Hugo and Margaret (Karlson) Van Winkle. She lived her early life on the family farm east of Winter with her parents, brother, Jim, and grandparents Louis & Martha Karlson. Life on the farm included the usual housework helping entertain our numerous guests, tending to our large vegetable garden, and occasionally thrashing her younger, pesky brother. Carol attended school in Winter and was a marching band member. She graduated high school in 1966. In her youth she was a faithful attendee of Evangelical Free Church of Winter and the youth group which was at that time combined with the Radisson Free Church as well. She looked forward to the annual summer Bible camp in Chetek. She and husband Gary met at a youth group meeting in Radisson.

After high school she attended Trinity College in Deerfield, IL for two years before transferring to St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Marshfield. She became a registered nurse when she graduated from nursing school in May 1969. She was married to Gary Schuck that same month at the Church. Carol resided in Marshfield, working at St. Joseph's Hospital since Gary was in the service. Following his return from overseas, they lived in Fayetteville, North Carolina until his discharge from the service. They then returned to Winter and she resided here since that time. Children Tracey, Robert & Ruth were born here.

Carol continued to work at her calling in health care in several ways including the county's home health and public health services - Winter School nurse, camp nurse and EMT volunteer. Caring for many in the community for many years until her retirement in 2008. Carol was an active and long time member of the church. I do recall Carol helping tar the outside of the basement walls when this building was being built. She serviced the church in numerous capacities including the Ladies Dorcas Society, Sunday School teacher, Christian education director and deaconess.

Carol enjoyed traveling. Special times included four trips to Norway, meeting family there, and also traveling to the British Isles. Traveling in their motor home to the west coast and visiting friends there was also an adventure. She especially looked forward to special times spent with her grandchildren, Paige, Kelsey, Sierra and Jude. The arrival of great granddaughter Dixie was an added joy for her.

She is survived by her husband Gary; son Robert G. Schuck; daughters Tracey L. Schuck & Ruth J. Waltenberg; four grandchildren, one great grandchild; brother James R. Van Winkle; many nephews & nieces.

Carol was preceded by her parents Hugo & Margaret Van Winkle; grandparents Louis & Martha (Signebøen), Joel & Ollie Moe Van Winkle; and many other loved one.
