Donald "Grandpa" L. Frederickson, age 90, of Hayward passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, May 9, 2012, at Hayward Area Memorial Hospital with family by his side.
Donald LeRoy was born January 11, 1922 in Naperville, IL, the son of Will and Alta (Bailey) Frederickson. He attended Naperville Community High until his family moved to Livingston County Michigan, where he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942. Don served with General Patton in Africa, N. Africa, Normandy and various European campaigns with the 87th Engineers. He was discharged in 1945 from Fort Sill, OK after receiving the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Medal, American Theatre Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, 7 Bronze stars and a purple heart.
After his discharge he moved back to Fowlerville, MI. In 1946 he met his wife of 53 years Virginia (Melvin) Miller and her two children. Don and Virginia were married May 29, 1946, after several years they moved back to Naperville. Having three more children of their own and lived there until 1997 when they moved to Hayward, WI and retired.
Don enjoyed working the Boy and Girl Scouts, little league and family projects. He enjoyed many bon fires, campouts, family reunions, Saturday night family dinners with all his family and playing cards and Scrabble.
He is survived by his children Paula Frederickson of Spring Valley, IL, Herman Miller of Seneca, IL, Louise Frederickson of Cable, WI, Mary Frederickson of Palatine, IL, Will (Kathy) Frederickson of Wheaton, IL; sisters Ruth Gary of San Jose, CA, Geraldine Frederickson of Sandwich, IL, Audrey Murr of Naperville, IL; grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his wife Virginia; parents Will & Alta; brothers Wilber, Wayne and Charles Frederickson; sister Eldora (Frederickson) Juha; granddaughter Pam (Miller) Darmetko; nephews Orin Frederickson and Wilber Ray Frederickson
The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 14, at Pineview Funeral Service in Hayward. Rev. Timothy Young will officiate with music provided by Krystal Rauch. Military Honors will be accorded by the Hayward Veterans Council and State of Wisconsin Military Honors Team. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Hayward. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Sunday, May 13 at the funeral home, and again from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Monday prior to the service.
Casket bearers will be Jim Gary, Wally Gougar, Scott Miller, D.J. Orbell, James Rauch and Rich Rauch.
