Evelyn Lorraine Shalow, age 84, of Lac Courte Oreilles, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2023.
Evelyn was born October 2, 1939, in Hayward the daughter of Byrl and Ruth (Coon) Carley, the first of eight children. She attended the Kinnoman School from grades first thru eighth. In 1973, Evelyn began working at the Reserve Head Start as a cook. In 1975, she started as a teacher's aide in the New Post School. Evelyn stayed on within the school during the move into the current LCO Schools we have today. After a while she decided to return to the LCO Head Start Program as an assistant teacher until her retirement in 2009, after which she enjoyed her off time being at home surrounded by her family and friends and her dog Bob. Over the years Evelyn enjoyed many different hobbies that included sewing, beading cooking, reading, watching her Lifetime movies and listening to honkey tonk music. She was a loving, kind and wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, auntie, sister and friend to all she met. Evelyn's strength, generosity and love will always stay with everyone she's ever encountered in her lifetime. She was a 1st degree Midewiwin member.
She is survived by her daughters Debra (Melvin) White, Dianne Sharlow, Doris "Dorrie" (Marvin Sr.) Corbine, Denise (James "Jack") Hamilton & Denelle Sharlow; 17 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren & 10 great great grandchildren; brothers Dick (Theresa) Carley, Tom (Carol) Carley & Don (Sandy) Carley; sister-in-law Ida Carley; many nieces & nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Alex Sharlow Sr., parents Byrl & Ruth; daughter Dana Sharlow; infant baby girl Sharlow; grandson James Hamilton & great grandson Kenneth Taylor Jr.; brothers James Carley, William Carley & Antoine Carley; sisters Marge Carley, Jeanette (Jim) O'Brien; nieces & nephews.
Midewiwin Funeral Rites were held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 1, 2024, at Big Drum Ceremonial Center in Lac Courte Oreilles. Keller Paap officiated. Burial was in Historyland Cemetery in Hayward. Visitation began at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, December 31st at Big Drum Ceremonial Center.
Honorary casket bearers were Mary Ellen Baker, Beverly Bearheart, Don Carley, Richard Carley, Tom Carley, Pearl Mike, Jim Miller, William Morrow, Terre Sander, Dianne Sullivan & Mike Sullivan.
Casket Bearers were Jason Carley, Raif Miller, Donny Morrow, Dustin Morrow, Robert Sharlow Sr. & Robert Sharlow Jr.
