Gilbert R. Straus, age 83, of Winter, WI died Monday, November 20, 2017 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.

Gilbert "Gil" R. Straus was born August 6, 1934 in Chicago, IL the son of Gilbert and Mildred (Schmidt) Straus. Gil served two years in the U.S. Army in Germany, then after his military service he graduated from UW Stevens Point and received his B.S. Degree. After a year at Medford Teachers College Gil met Janice Hancock and they married in July 1966. Both were teachers and taught in Wisconsin and Alaska. They retired in the late 1990's and moved into a new home on Lake Winter. Gil enjoyed fishing and traveling in his retirement years. He and Janice spent the last 10 winters at their home in Destin, FL.

He is survived by his wife Janice; son Randy (Cherie) Straus; grandchildren Raegan, Logan & Jaxon; sister Vivian Stinson; brother-in-law Bob (Carol) Hancock; nephews Jeffrey & Mark Hancock, Brian & Jeffrey Straughan.

Gil was preceded in death by his parents Gilbert & Mildred.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 24, 2017 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Winter. Father Jerome D'Souza officiated with music provided by Marie Ellickson. was in St. Peter's Cemetery. Visitation was held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., prior to Mass at the church.
