Joyce Elaine Friermood, age 82, of Barnes, WI, passed away on May 11, 2016, at St. Mary's Hospital, Duluth, MN.
Joyce was born in Flint, MI, on July 10, 1933, the daughter and eighth child of ten children born to Minnie and Joseph White. After the unexpected death of her father when she was 11, Joyce moved with her mother and five youngest siblings to Elsinore, CA. On New Year's Day, 1953, Joyce married Bill Friermood. They lived in Elsinore, moving to Barnes in 1956, where she lived until the time of her death.
Known as "Grandma" to her family, friends, and most everyone she knew, Joyce was a homemaker, gardener, seamstress, and cake baker/decorator. Additionally, Joyce spent many years working as a waitress and cook at the "Koffee Kup", in Barnes. However, she was best known for her love of children, young and old; perhaps the reason for her grandma title. A testament to that is the fact that in addition to raising their own seven children, Joyce and Bill spent several years as foster parents.
Joyce enjoyed life and being involved, even playing softball until the age of 65. She had a pitch that few could successfully hit against. There are not many people in the area that haven't tasted her famous cakes, sampled homemade jams, or checked out her gardens. Her love and kindness was evident to all, whether she was caring for her family, acting as the caregiver for her husband, Bill, following his stroke, or helping others in her town. The door was always open and the coffee was always on.
Joyce is survived by two daughters: Shirley (Gaylon) Heise of Lake Tomahawk, Julie Sarkauskas of Barnes, four sons: Gary (Julia) Friermood of Cable, Rick Friermood of Cable, Jack (Heidi) Friermood, of Dickinson, ND, Bill (Tammy) Friermood of Running Springs, CA, son-in-law Steve Roesler of Chippewa Falls, 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, two sisters: Oleta Dusek and Arlene Flack, and a brother, Elmer White.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, daughter, Debbie Roesler, and her siblings,
Harold White, Chet White, Joseph White, Earl White, Larry White, and Robert White.
A Memorial Gathering was held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 27, 2016 at Barnes VFW Hall in Barnes.
Honorary Pallbearers were Gary Friermood, Rick Friermood, Jack Friermood, Bill Friermood, Gaylon Heise, and Steve Roesler.
