Laura "Jean" Walczak, age 73, of Birchwood, died Monday, November 18, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, WI.
Laura "Jean" Walczak was born on February 19, 1940 in Hayward, WI the daughter of Delbert and Frances (White) Van Gilder Sr. She grew up in Birchwood, then moved to Chicago after high school. Jean then returned back to the Couderay/Birchwood area where she spent her life. She worked as a waitress for area restaurants in Birchwood. Jean was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She loved do to crossword puzzles, puzzles, play Scrabble and cards, bake and the occasional visit to the casino. Jean always had the coffee pot on and some delicious baked goods for all who stopped by. She was quick witted, had a great laugh and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by her son Ritchie (Malinda) Brown; daughter Pam (Dan) Jeske; step-sons John (Chris) Walczak, Jim (Leslie) Walczak, Jerry (Frances) Walczak, Mike (Amy) Walczak, Dan (Sandy) Walczak; 19 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; brothers Jim (Bonnie) Van Gilder, Delbert (Millie) Van Gilder Jr., Jerry Van Gilder; sister Betty (Mark) Amundson; many nephews and nieces. Jean was especially close to her niece Rose Chafer. Rose was not only family, but a best friend.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband John Walczak; son Kevin "Pete" Brown; step-sons Joseph & Jeffrey Walczak; brothers Robert & William Van Gilder; sister Dorothy Skar.
The Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, November 21 at Pineview Funeral Service in Hayward with Rev. Timothy Young officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Couderay. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon on Thursday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
Honorary casket bearer will be Craig Skar and Russell Van Gilder.
Casket bearers will be Todd Chafer, Scott Frey, Scott Spaeth, Barry Van Gilder, Paul Van Gilder and Rocky Van Gilder.
