Leo A. Long of Stone Lake, WI, passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2012 at Spooner Health System in Spooner.
Leo Aloysius was born on February 24, 1925 in Terre Haute, IN to Rufus and Irma (Beatty) Long. Leo served in the Army Air Corps from 1942-1945 in the European Theatre. After his discharge at the end of WWII, He attended Deforest Electronic Training in Chicago under the GI bill. He then was employed at Zenith Electronic Corp. as a member of the design team that developed the first color Television that Zenith marketed. He moved his family to Stone Lake in 1959 and in addition to his in-home TV repair business, also was employed by the US Postal Service. He retired from the Postal Service after 22 years in 1981. He was instrumental in forming the Stone Lake Volunteer Fire Department in 1961 and served as the first President of the Department and later as a Captain for many years. The clock that still sounds the Fire siren at noon each day in Stone Lake was one of his creations.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Frances; sons Robert (Janet) Long, Steven (Lisa) Long; daughters Judith (Ed) Gregory; Suzanne (Gary) Bartz; grandchildren Chad, Gina, Kim, Robert, Scott G., Scott M, Shawna and Stacey; 14 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; many nephews and nieces.
Leo is preceded in death by his parents; brother Jack Long; sisters Betty Gibson and Coralie Stueve.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 21, 2012 at Stone Lake Wesleyan Church with Pastor Timothy Young officiating and music provided by Pastor Shawna Bartz and Carol Sheehan. Military Honors will be accorded by Hayward Veterans Council. Inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Stone Lake, WI. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of services on Friday at the church.
